Miller Field Now Is the Worst

One of the benefits of Winthrop High playing the annual Thanksgiving Day game with Revere at the Patriots’ brand new sports facility is that hundreds of our fellow residents got to see the new Harry Della Russo Stadium, with its state-of-the-art turf field and adjacent sports complex.

We say that it was a “benefit” because hopefully many of our fellow residents now will realize how pitiful Miller Field is and of the great need to rebuild the stadium. Miller Field itself — which was a WPA project in the late 1930s — is beautiful when the weather is dry and the sun is shining, but it turns into a mosh pit whenever it rains, creating an unsafe playing surface for our youth. The track facility at Miller is so bad that the Northeastern Conference does not allow Winthrop High to host home meets (which has been the case for a number of years).

It is fair to say that our town has one of the worst high school athletic facilities in the state. We hope that with the imminent completion of the new middle/high school building, a way can be found to rebuild Miller Field to give our children a place to play their athletic events that is safe and up to the standards of the 21st century.
