Good Luck, Winthrop Youth Football

Winthrop’s Youth Football organization, under the direction of president and eighth grade team coach Peter Caggiano, is having an historic season with two teams (seventh and eighth) set to compete in the “Super Bowls” Saturday at Lynnfield High School.

It’s been somewhat amazing what the Winthrop High School program has accomplished through the years, inasmuch as we are the smallest school (enrollment-wise) in the Northeastern Conference, but always overachieving under great coaches such as Bob DeFelice, Tony Fucillo, and Sean Driscoll.

The head coaches of the two teams who will be playing for the championship Sunday, Peter Caggiano and Chris Ferrara (who was a member of the 1992 Winthrop High Super Bowl team),  certainly deserve credit for leading their teams into what will be exciting title games.

Win or lose, Winthrop is being well-represented by these volunteer-coaches and the players who have been practicing hard all season with the hope of being the best team in the league.

We understand that Winthrop has its own “Tom Bradys” calling the signals in eighth grade quarterback Duke Doherty and seventh grade quarterback Austin Daigneault, who led his team to an incredible overtime win over Amesbury in the semifinals.

Good luck, Winthrop. We hope you can spring the upsets and bring the championship banners home.
