Excitement Builds for Topping off Ceremony

If you weren’t excited by that new $81 million school building rising quickly at 400 Main Street, where the old Winthrop High School once stood — then you have to be now after school officials and town leaders gathered for the topping off ceremony on a cool and windy day Tuesday. Town Council President Peter Gill, whose children and grandchildren attended the old high school, was among those signing his name to the last piece of steel placed on the structure. Gill said the new school is a great investment in our town and we couldn’t agree more. Town Manager James McKenna was also present for the ceremony and the school is but one more positive thing that has happened here since his arrival. And we must single out the work of Marylou Osborne, David Dockendorff, and the Winthrop School Building Assistance Committee, who worked so hard to make this project a reality.

Perhaps our superintendent of schools, John Macero, had the most exciting comment of the day, when he told the assemblage, “In 14 months, we’ll be here to cut the ribbon.”

We can only imagine the excitement that the students and their parents will feel when they enter their brand new school for the first time on that day.
