Basketball Coach Dimarino Resigns

We were frankly stunned when we heard last Friday that Winthrop High boys basketball coach Michael DiMarino had resigned from his position after three seasons. We know Michael well dating back to his days as a player and assistant coach in the Savio High School basketball program and his knowledge of the game and his ability to teach the fundamentals have served him well in his entire coaching career.

Michael worked hard in trying to maintain the excellence established by his predecessor, David Brown, who had led Winthrop to a state title, but as the smallest school in the Northeastern Conference — which has had a number of powerful teams (this year’s Division 2 state champion Danvers, Beverly, Lynn English, Lynn Classical) in the past few seasons — it was a tough challenge for the Vikings to duplicate Dave Brown’s success.

Michael DiMarino understood that a good basketball coach today must extend his reach beyond the basketball season. High school athletics today are truly year-round, with off-season training, AAU basketball, summer league play, and fundraising for the program. Michael’s players gave it 100 per cent on the court and represented our town well during his tenure. And we have no doubt that Michael DiMarino will return to the basketball bench soon and help other student-athletes expand their love of the game while preparing them for college.

We know that Michael DiMarino loves this town in which he grew up and is now a homeowner here. We thank Michael for his efforts at Winthrop High and wish him well in all his future endeavors, including in his full-time position as a highly respected history teacher in the Revere school system.

Winthrop director of athletics Matt Serino said a selection process for a new coach will begin and it is expected that there will be a large number of candidates for the position.
