Thank You, Peter Gobiel

The announcement by long-time Winthrop High teacher and Athletic Director Peter Gobiel that he will be retiring will leave a void in many ways that will be hard to replace.

Peter is a shining example of a Winthrop resident who grew up here as a member of a prominent long-time family and who gave back to his community every day of his life.

The athletic director’s job is one of long hours — often keeping Peter busy nights and weekends in addition to school days. It is also a year-round position, but Peter has always been dedicated to the job, looking out for the very best for all of our student-athletes.

Peter has done an outstanding job running the WHS athletic program. This fall was another great season in which the football team won the Northeastern Conference championship and played in the North Sectional championship game, finishing with a sterling 10-1 record. The girls soccer team advanced to the North Sectional final, winning three games in the State Tournament. The volleyball team qualified for the state tourney in only its second season as an official varsity sport. The girls basketball team is poised to make a solid run at the Massachusetts state championship.

The Winthrop High athletic program has expanded in recent years under Peter’s tenure, bringing to Winthrop High students the opportunities to play girls volleyball and boys and girls lacrosse.

Peter is a giant in the field of gymnastics. He is a former long-time gymnastics coach at Winthrop High and Northeastern University. He also has operated the Winthrop Gymnastics Academy for 29 years. Hundreds of Winthrop children have enjoyed classes at the Gymnastics Academy, a fun and safe environment with an outstanding staff of gymnastics coaches.

Peter and his wife, Sharon, have raised four children: Jessica, a graduate of Framingham State University; Jennifer, a student at Endicott College; Joseph, a student at Bentley University; and Jamie, a senior at Winthrop High School. All four were/are members of the Winthrop High National Honor Society and came through the Winthrop school system.

Aside from his school-related activities, Peter has also been involved for many years with the Point Shirley Horribles Parade on July 4, one of the most anticipated events on the town calendar for children and parents.

Peter fought a battle against throat cancer six years ago and he was out of commission for awhile, but he has returned to lead a full and vibrant life and he is now is in excellent health. His determination in fighting cancer was a courageous example of the spirit and competitive heart that he possesses, perhaps a product of his many years involved in athletic competition.

Thank you so much, Peter Gobiel, for all your hard work and contributions to not only our athletic program, but our entire town. We know we join with the entire Winthrop community in wishing you the best in your retirement.  May your future years hold more great times and treasured memories. We hope the town will find an appropriate and deserving tribute for all you have given to us in your distinguished career in education.
