The Driscoll Dynamic

This is a big week for the Winthrop High football team as the Vikings — who have 18 seniors on their roster — seek to open their season on a winning note against Saugus. It’s certainly an exciting week in the Driscoll household where head coach Sean Driscoll and his son, starting quarterback, Dylan Driscoll, are preparing for their final season as a coach/QB tandem.

What a unique thrill it must be for Dylan to be the quarterback for a team coached by his dad, a former Viking football player who was a sophomore on a Super Bowl championship in 1983. Having your son as the QB has happened before in WHS football annals, most recently when Hall of Fame coach Tony Fucillo coached his two sons, Anthony and James, who excelled as signal callers and defensive players for the Vikings. Of course, James’s 2006 team won the Super Bowl with an undefeated record, beating Wareham in the championship game. And let’s not forget the father/son combo of Ed MacFarland and his sons, Keith and Lance, back in the early 1960s.

Something tells us that this could be a special season for the Vikings. Sean Driscoll has had the program on the brink of greatness the past few seasons, just missing by a game a conference championship.

We wish the football team and all of our fall sports teams successful 2014 campaigns.
