We know the school year is coming soon because Winthrop High golf coach Peter Lyons has sent along his annual reminder that the first WHS golf practice of the season is set for Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 9 a.m. at the Winthrop Golf Course.
Lyons, who has been a member of the Winthrop Golf Club for 30 years, has served as the Vikings’ golf coach for the past decade and really puts a lot of time and energy into his highly-regarded golf program. His program certainly benefits from having a golf course right in the town and having the great support of the club professional, Jim Bruce.
Lyons’s program has been on the rise in recent years. Last year the Vikings finished fourth in the sectionals, the best finish ever for a Winthrop golf team. Michael Rich, the returning senior captain, advanced all the way to the state finals, and he should be one of the top players in the Northeastern Conference again this season.
Peter is a 1978 graduate of Winthrop High School, but he is well known in the city of Chelsea where he and his brother, John, attended Camp Robie at the Chelsea YMCA when they were growing up. Peter was a very popular camper who was well known for his athletic prowess, often excelling against the “older kids†in various sports, especially baseball and candlepin bowling.
We look forward to following the progress of this year’s WHS golf team.
