Delehanty Warns Residents: About Telephone ‘arrest’ Scam

Chief Terence Delehanty is warning residents to be wary of a scam involving individuals claiming they are representatives of the Sheriff’s Department and informing the residents that they have outstanding warrants for their arrests for failing to attend jury duty or responding to a summons.

Delehanty said the department received numerous calls from residents who were targeted in the scam. One intended victim said the individual on the telephone demanded that $1,000 in warrant and court costs be paid to avoid being arrested by deputy sheriffs.Delehanty said anyone contacted by these individuals should immediately call the Winthrop Police Department.
