Harriet White Jones

Devoted Caretaker of Family, Friends and Animals and longtime Legal Secretary

Harriet White Jones of Winthrop, devoted caretaker of family, friends and animals and longtime legal secretary in Boston, died May 14 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 70 years old.

Born in Boston, Harriet lived most of her adult life in Winthrop with her late husband, Robert Jones. She was the daughter of the late E. Laurence White and Margaret Parker.

Harriet grew up with her family in Turkey, Italy and Washington, D.C. but returned to Cambridge completing her senior year at Buckingham Browne & Nichols in 1962. She was a star performer at the Katharine Gibbs School. She was hired in 1964 as a legal secretary and remained until 2007 at the law firm of Warner & Stackpole in Boston, which eventually merged with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart. One claim to fame was that she was the fastest typist in the office prior to the advent of computers and word processors; Harriet would boast she was faster than a computer.

Besides family, Harriet’s great loves were her cats and Tibetan Terriers. When not working, she offered dog grooming services and would prepare dogs for competitions. Another claim to fame was that for a number of years she held the distance record for flying a glider between Easton, Penn. and Lawrence, Mass., without a touchdown. She also enjoyed golfing with her husband, so much so that they would often play the course twice in a row.

She is survived by her sister Sheilah Doble of Mount Arlington, N.J., and nephews Douglas Doble of Brooklyn, N.Y., William Doble of New York City, N.Y., and Matthew Guffey of Stowe, VT.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Harriet’s name to the dog training program for: Seeing Eye, Inc., P.O. Box 375, Morristown, N.J., 07963-0375.

Longtime US Postal Service Letter Carrier

Susan Marie Otolo of Winthrop, formerly of Revere, died suddenly at home on June 19.

Susan worked for many years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Richard and Edith (Currier) Otolo and is also survived by many loving family members and friends.
