Football Pancake Breakfast

What is perhaps the most enduring tradition on the local sports scene (and one of the longest on any local scene, for that matter) is set to take place Sunday morning when the Winthrop High football team hosts its annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast in the Winthrop High cafeteria from 8 a.m. -12 p.m.

As always, the Viking football players and coaches will serve up an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast that always makes for a fun and satisfying occasion for Dad and the kids. The breakfast mixes pancakes and football — what can be a better combination than that?

And what’s even better is that the breakfast costs just $6.00 per person — a great deal by any measure — but what makes it a truly superb affair is that all proceeds benefit the Winthrop High football program for which the Pancake Breakfast is by far its biggest, and most necessary, fundraiser of the year.

We recall that when the Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast first began, about 50 years ago in the mid-1960s, the funds were devoted to paying for the football team’s pre-season camp at Camp Nellie Huckins (now there’s a blast from the past) in New Hampshire. However nowadays, in this extended-era of budget cutbacks and reductions in support for athletic programs, the fundraiser is crucial to supporting our Winthrop High Viking football program.

So we hope as many Dads (and others) as possible will make it to the football breakfast Sunday morning. It’s fun, delicious, satisfying, and benefits a great group of boys who will be representing Winthrop on the gridiron in the fall.
