Will Lisa Play in Alumni Game?

The final basketball game at Winthrop High School will be played on Wednesday, June 18, when WHS girls head coach Ignacio Oyola has scheduled an Alumni Game versus his current Lady Vikings team.

It’s great to hear that All-American Courtney Finn will be playing in the game. Finn is coming off a season in which she helped lead the Bentley women’s basketball team to the NCAA national title. Reports are that some of Courtney’s Winthrop teammates, including track All-American Nicole Giaquinto, former Babson captain Katerina Mallios, and Bates College scholar-athlete Kristen Finn (Courtney’s sister) will be participating in the game.

But the big question that everyone wants to know is whether Lisa Monteleone Ferrara, one of Winthrop High’s greatest athletes of all time, will return to the basketball court and compete for the Alumni team. Lisa put one one of the most remarkable performances in Powder Puff football history at Miller Field, but it’s her basketball and softball prowess that landed her in the Winthrop High School Hall of Fame. Who can ever forget Lisa pitching a complete-game shutout on a faraway field in Whitinsville as Ron Spinney’s softball team won the state championship 30 years ago? A superb point guard, Lisa also joined with Maureen McManus and Company to help Winthrop defeat Westwood and win an Eastern Mass. basketball championship (There were no state championship games in that season).

Maybe Lisa would agree to a one-on-one game with Courtney Finn at halftime so we can decide once and for all — no, let’s not go there. Let’s just remember Lisa’s incredible athletic career and hope she’ll be on hand for the last go-round on the Holland Gymnasium court.
