Lawrence ‘Larry’ Blake

First Lay Principal at BC High School

Lawrence D. “Larry” Blake of Winthrop passed away at the Cambridge Hospital on February 1. He was 71 years old.

A graduate of BC High and Boston College, he earned an M.Ed. from Boston State and an Ed.D. from Boston College. During his 40 years of teaching at BC High, Larry also served as the first lay Academic Vice Principal and then as the first lay Principal. He was passionate about increasing diversity among the student body at BC High and established the school’s position of Diversity Director. Larry had a lifelong love of golf and spent many weekends on the course with his brother and friends.

The beloved husband of Paula M. (Resca) Blake, he was born in Winthrop, the son of the late John F. and Mary T. (Boland) Blake. He was the devoted father of Barbara A. Blake and her husband, Jose Ezaquiel of Winthrop, Nora Blake and her partner, Dan Jarvis of Chesterfield and Julia Blake and her husband, Kevin Grant of East Boston; adored grandfather of Lillian; dear brother of Celia Lizotte of Charlotte, NC and twin brother of Stephen Blake of Lynn. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His Funeral will be held from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Friday, February 7 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home today, Thursday only, between 4 and 8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Lawrence Blake Scholarship for Diversity, BC High, 150 Morrissey Blvd., Boston, MA 02125.
