Bob Defelice at Bentley: Former Whs Grid Coach Brings Excellence

How great it was to see Bob DeFelice during our visit on Saturday to Bentley University where we saw two of the best collegiate players in Division 2 — St. Anselm guard Dino Mallios, who is leading the country in assists for the second year in a row, and Courtney Finn, who is having an All-American caliber season for the No. 1-ranked Bentley women’s team. Both Dino and Courtney are Winthrop High grads who enjoyed storied careers for the Vikings.

It was wonderful to see Bob DeFelice holding court with the many Winthrop people who came over to say hello to the Bentley Director of Athletics who has a baseball field named in his honor on the Waltham campus. What great facilities Bentley has for its sports teams — and who would expect anything less with Bob DeFelice at the helm of this superb athletic program?

Bob DeFelice led Winthrop through an incredible era of Viking football with three consecutive undefeated seasons and two Super Bowl titles. We jested with Bob about that amazing 1982 Viking team that was 10-0 — undefeated, but uninvited to the Super Bowl because of the ratings system in place at that time.

Thank you, Bob DeFelice, for continuing to provide an excellent and productive atmosphere for all the coaches and athletes under your supervision at Bentley.

And congratulations to Courtney Finn’s coach, Barbara Stevens, on the 900th win of her amazing college basketball coaching career.
