Congratulations, vice President DelVento: Nick Has Been a Fixture on the Council since Its Inceptio

We join with the Town Council and the residents of the community  in congratulating Precinct 3 Councilor Nicholas DelVento on his election as the vice president of the Council for 2014.

The other councilors voted unanimously for DelVento, who has been a member of the Town Council since the new form of government was instituted in Winthrop. Nick has been an exemplary town official and an excellent representative for all the residents of his precinct. The fact that he has been unopposed in his bids for re-election means that his constituents feel that he is working hard and watching out for their best interests in his position on the Council.

There is no questioning the work ethic of Councilor DelVento. When Nick speaks out on an issue, you always know that he has researched the topic and examined thoroughly the points-of-views on both sides.

Nick will stand up for what he believes is the right course of action. During the recent meeting in which several opponents of the casino project at Suffolk Downs asked the Council to write a letter against the project going forward on the Revere side of Suffolk Downs, DelVento moved to postpone action of the matter, essentially nullfying the casino opponents’ request.

Perhaps what we admire most about DelVento is that he is front and center supporting our local organizations, our sports teams, and our causes. Nick is there not because he’s seeking votes, but because he truly loves this town and being a part of its daily life.

It was heartwarming to see his wife, Cathy, and their daughter, Alicia, a former Winthrop High cheerleading captain who is now a freshman at UNH, at the town’s swearing-in ceremony January 6. How proud Cathy and Alicia must be that Nick has chosen to serve as one of only nine councilors who are making decisions that impact the town’s 18,000 residents.

We expect Nick DelVento will continue to excel and be diligent in his “promotion” to the No. 2 position of leadership behind President Peter Gill.
