K-K Contractors Win Town Hoop Championship

The freshly painted McKenna Basketball Courts certainly had their share of competitive basketball this summer.

Over the past six weeks we saw the high school team sponsored by Speaker DeLeo improve each time it stepped on the court. Young legs and trying to force uptempo play gave teams trouble throughout the season.

The playoffs that were just completed saw close contests with games being decided in the final minutes and others extending into overtime.

In the opening round the Seigal Club took the eventual champion K-K Contractors to a two-possession game with less than three minutes remaining. In the other game a few unlucky breaks by the Feeley Club late in the contest let the Williams Club sneak by with a three-point win.

In second round play Kathy’s Place, who was undefeated going into the last week of season, had the misfortune of playing K-K Contractors who were definitely hitting their stride at the right time.

As one can imagine the final game came down to a last-minute possession where K-K Contractors was able to thwart a last-minute comeback by Mutual Beef. K-K Contractors showed great team play throughout the season and we say, Congratulations, KK Contractors, on being our town’s summer basketball league champion for 2013.

All in all the season was a great success with hoops returning for the summer months. Close to 50 games were played with nothing close to a forfeit. The players should be commended for their fair, but hard play and the overall competitiveness.

To the young players, one of the best sounds in town is hearing the ball pounding the pavement on Walden Street.

Special thanks to league commissioner Phil Lundberg and Parks and Recreation Director Sean Driscoll for restoring a terrific summertime tradition in our town.

Keep playing and see you ‘round the rim.
