We want to take a small space to say, “Congratulations,†to the Winthrop High softball team for a fine season which saw our Lady Vikings fall by a slim 5-4 margin last Thursday in Lowell in the semifinals of the Division 3 North Sectional of the MIAA state softball tournament.
Coach David Guffey, who is recognized in the coaching fraternity as among the best in the area (as well as being a top pitching coach), guided his team, which started the year as an unknown quantity, to an outstanding 16-7 season. The Winthrop girls were the surprise of the Northeastern Conference and the entire North Shore, displaying both skill and mental toughness that belied the team’s overall youth.
With the Lady Vikings losing only a few players to graduation, next year also promises to be a banner one under Guffey’s direction, and we look forward to writing more good things about the WHS softball program.
