Selma Nasher

Retired Bookkeeper

Selma Nasher, recently of Arizona and a former longtime resident of Winthrop and Brookline, passed away suddenly on March 15. She was 85 years old.

She was the daughter of the late Max and Bessie (Polatnik) Nasher and is survived by her cherished sister, Zena Ceder.  She was also the adored aunt of Carol Tanzar, Ken Ceder, Len Ceder and Linda Ceder, all of Arizona and also leaves 17 great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Zviller Cemetery, 776 Baker St., W. Roxbury today, Thursday, March 21 at 12 noon.  Donations in her memory may be made to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 N. Beacon St., Watertown, MA 02472.  Funeral arrangements are under the care of Levine Chapels, Brookline.

Rita Franzese

Daughter and Sister of Legislators;
Active in Many Organizations

Rita M. Franzese of Orlando Avenue, Winthrop passed away at the Woodbriar Nursing Care Center in Wilmington after a prolonged illness. She was 82 years old.

Born in the North End of Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Hon. Clementina (Poto) and Senator Joseph A. Langone Jr.

She was a resident of Winthrop for more than 54 years, a volunteer at the Cottage Park Yacht Club, a Regional Test Person for the United States Figure Skating Association and a volunteer and coach for Winthrop Youth Hockey.
She was the devoted wife of the late Atty. William P. Franzese and the loving mother of Janice S. Cushing and her husband, Leo of Lexington, Joseph P. Franzese and his wife, Lisa P. of Winthrop, William P. Franzese of Marblehead, Paula E. Rie and her husband, Marc of Melrose and the late Christine M. Franzese; dear sister of Madeline Sarno and the late Boston City Councillor Joseph A. Langone III, Frederick C. Langone, William N. Langone and Louise DeStefano and the cherished grandmother of William, Ashlee, Kirby, Trip and Annabelle.

Hyman Brill

Co-owner of Brill’s Radio and TV of Winthrop

Hyman Brill of Winthrop died on March 7.

A US Army veteran of World War II, he was the co-owner for 41 years of Brill’s Radio and TV in Winthrop and the loving and devoted son of the late Morris Brill and Jennie (Bix) Brill; dear brother of Bessie Sall and the late Myer Brill; loving uncle of Cheryl Brill, Jacqueline Corthers, Barry Sall, Michael Brill and the late David Brill and is also survived by many extended loving family and friends.

A graveside service was held on March 10 in New Tifereth Israel Cemetery Winthrop, Fuller Street, Everett.

Grange Bernard

Longtime Dispatcher for Viking Taxi

Grange H.Y. Bernard of Clark Avenue, Chelsea passed away at the Eastpointe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on March 18 after a long illness. He was 54 years old. Born in Boston, he was the beloved son of Angela (Marco) and Gregory Bernard. A resident of Chelsea for over 14 years, he was employed as a dispatcher for Viking Taxi for many years.
He was the loving husband of Andrea (Rorick) and the beloved father of Hope of Chelsea, Alisha of Haverhill, Cody of Chelsea, Jordyn of Chelsea and Renata of Brockton;  the dear brother of Frank A. Daloia of Winthrop and Aprile Bernard of New Hampshire;  the cherished grandfather of Quintan, Jaiden and Emma.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation on Saturday, March 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Committal will be private. Anna Rose Carbone

Of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston

Anna Rose Carbone of Franklin Street, Winthrop passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on March 11 after a brief illness. She was 90 years old.

Born in East Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Marie Vincenza (Miranda) and Vincent Oliva. A resident of Winthrop for more than 80 years, she was a member of the class of 1940 of East Boston High School, St. John’s Mother’s Club, Dominic Savio Parents Group, St. John’s Misselman Drum & Bugle Team, member National Square Dancers Association and member and President “Lancers” Square Dance Club, Danvers.
She was the devoted wife of the late Gaetano A. Carbone and the loving mother of Victor A. Carbone of Winthrop, Marie Cammarata of Salem, New Hampshire and Guy A. Carbone of Winthrop; the dear sister of Vincent Oliva of Groveland, Bruna Oliva of Reading, Mario Oliva of Lynn and the late Angela Scarpa, Guy, Bart and Dante Oliva; cherished grandmother of Laurie, Anna-Rose, Joseph and Michael. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren.

Louise Elizabeth Papile

Retired Hairstylist

Louise Elizabeth (Machado) Papile peacefully entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 16 at the Aviv Centers for Living in Peabody. She was 92 years old. Born in Rockland, she was the beloved daughter and youngest born to the late Mary Rose (Corriea) and Alfred Machado from the Azores Islands. She was employed for many years as a hairstylist for the Sheraton in Boston.

The cherished wife of the late Natale Edward Salvatore (Ned) Papile of Quincy, she was the dear sister of the late Olive M. Henderson of Hingham, Julia McPherson of Florida, Sophia M. Russell of Florida, Frank Machado of Rockland and Alfred Machado of New York. She is survived by her daughters, Joanne L. Kniffen of Palm Beach, Florida and Maureen M. Papile of Winthrop; her grandchildren: Lisa Freeman of Manchester, NH, Paul Guidry of Gainesville, Fla., Christine Kokoski of Hadley, Joseph N. Lepera, Jr. Nadine Smith Vascollera of Gainesville, Fla, Richard Kniffen of Reston, VA. and Susan Marshman.  She also leaves a legacy of 10 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in the Holy Rosary Church, 993 Shirley St., Winthrop.
