Help Pink the Rink: Saturday to Benefit Breast Cancer Awareness

The Winthrop High girls and boys hockey teams will do their part to raise breast cancer awareness, as well as to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer, when they host Marblehead in back-to-back games Saturday evening at Larsen Rink.

Coach Anthony Martucci and his girls will take on Marblehead at 5:00, followed by Coach Dale Dunbar and his boys at 7:00. We also wish to acknowledge the full support of the Marblehead girls and boys hockey players and coaches, who wholeheartedly have endorsed the event.

The doubleheader has been dubbed “Pink the Rink” for the occasion. Both teams will sport pink laces and pink tape and Larsen itself will be decked-out in pink. Proceeds from the game, as well as from a raffle, will be dedicated to the Marie Petrilli Fund, which assists those in the Winthrop community who are waging a personal fight against breast cancer.

The impetus for the Pink the Rink event is in recognition of the battle against the dreaded disease presently being fought by a Winthrop hockey mom, Leanne Silverman, who has two youngsters in the Winthrop hockey program.

We hope as many Winthrop residents, hockey fans or otherwise, turn out for this event (though we would urge you to arrive early!) to show their support for the effort to combat breast cancer,  which continues to claim far too many of our mothers, wives, sisters,  and daughters as its victims at too young an age.

As WHS coach Dale Dunbar put it, “Winthrop is a town that takes cares of its own. Pink the Rink is the sort of event that typifies how we come together as a community to show our support for each other.”
