Doc Harney: Local Doctor Gave Selflessly to Many Causes

For almost 20 years, Dr. Robert “Doc” Harney was the physician for the Winthrop schools, a position in which he not only treated countless WHS athletes, but from which he later became their friends and personal orthopedic surgeon.

Doc Harney was held in high esteem by everyone who came into contact with him, not only for his professionalism and surgical ability, but also because of his warm and friendly demeanor which made him a trusted and beloved member of the Viking sports scene. He was inducted into the WHS Hall of Fame in 2007.

But his skills, expertise, and respect within the profession extended far beyond our town. He was involved with the NFL, the Olympics, and Paralympic Sports, and was inducted into the National Disabled Ski Hall of Fame in 2011.

Doc Harney truly was one of a kind, a person who touched countless lives and who will be missed by all who came to know this kind and generous man.

We know we join with the entire Winthrop community in offering our condolences to his family.

A funeral mass to celebrate Dr. Harney’s life will be held on Friday, June 22, at 4:00 p.m. at St.  John the Evangelist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Bob Harney Sports Foundation, P.O Box 520324, Winthrop, MA 02152.
