Congratulations, Jillian Dempsey: Winthrop Native Nominated for National Award

We join the Winthrop Youth Hockey program and the entire town of Winthrop in congratulating Jillian Dempsey on her nomination for  the Patty Kazmaier Award that is given to the nation’s top women’s collegiate hockey player. Jillian is a junior at Harvard University where she has distinguished herself with her outstanding athletic performance for the Crimson. Jillian began skating and playing the game of hockey at Larsen Rink and developed her skills in the Winthrop Youth Hockey program before becoming a high school star at The Rivers School.

It’s quite an achievement for a talented young lady who is also an excellent student. We know that older sister Meaghan, a Harvard Class of 2010 graduate who is now part of the Teach for America program, was a great role model for not only for Jillian, but for her hockey-playing brothers Connor and Hunter as well.

We’re always amazed by the high number of athletes from Winthrop who go on to achieve so much success in college sports and beyond. Jillian Dempsey is another fine example of how youth sports can set the foundation to realizing one’s dreams in life.

Congratulations to the Dempsey family on Jillian’s accomplishments. We know there is much more to come from this true scholar-athlete.
