Casinos in the Forefront: Suffolk’s Bid for License Will Be the Big Story of 2012

Everyone knew that the possibility of casinos coming to Massachusetts would be one of the most watched stories of 2011, and anyone who has been following it knows how huge it’s become and how it will be an even bigger story in 2012.

Since the passage of the casino bill by the legislature, it’s been front-page news almost every day. Foxboro residents filled a hall this week to discuss the impact that a destination resort/casino could have on their community and they’ve been invited by legendary casino developer Steve Wynn to a meeting in January to hear his proposal for the land across from Gillette Stadium that is owned by Robert Kraft.

Of course, local officials, including our town manager James McKenna, are keeping an eye on all developments in the issue because Suffolk Downs in East Boston is a serious contender for one of the casino licenses. A casino/resort at Suffolk Down would definitely have an impact on our town in many aspects. Suffolk Downs has proven to be an excellent neighbor and a generous supporter of local organizations in the past and we expect that whatever plan is put forth by its owners will be of immense benefit to the area.

It will be fascinating for Winthrop residents to see how the casino issue develops and whether Suffolk Downs or the Wynn-led Foxboro casino receives the one license available for the Boston region.
