Well-deserved Honor: Naming of Senior Center After Robert Deleo is a Fitting Tribute

What a tremendous and well-deserved tribute the Town Council paid to Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo by voting to have the Winthrop Senior Center renamed the Robert A. DeLeo Senior Center.

Council President Jeffrey Turco praised Speaker DeLeo for being instrumental in helping launch the Senior Center and maintaining a strong commitment to all seniors in the town, first as a member of the Board of Selectmen and then in as role as state representative. The Speaker has become an advocate for seniors statewide and it’s fitting that he is receiving this great honor in his hometown where his career in public service began.

Nancy Williams, Director of the Winthrop Senior Center, will have the honor of officially announcing the renaming of the building at the center’s upcoming 20th anniversary celebration. There will be an official ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony sometime this fall.

The Speaker was his usual humble self when he heard about the Council’s special tribute to him. Robert A. DeLeo has risen to one of the most powerful positions in Massachusetts’ state government and has done much for the seniors of this community. We’re sure when Speaker DeLeo officially accepts this recognition, it will be an emotional moment for him as the town collectively says, “Thank you Bob, for all you have done for the seniors in this community.
