March Madness is in full swing in Winthrop, with the boys basketball and girls hockey teams still in contention for their respective championships.
Coach Anthony Martucci and his girls hockey team will play this evening against Braintree at 5:30 p.m. at the Watertown rink in a quarterfinal contest. Martucci and his crew pulled out an exciting 2-1 victory over Arlington in a shootout to earn their way into the quarterfinal round. No doubt tonight’s game will be equally as thrilling.
Coach Dave Brown’s WHS boys basketball team has advanced for the fourth straight year to the final of the Division 4 North Sectional. Winthrop will meet St. Mary’s of Lynn Saturday at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell for the North Sectional championship (tip off time had not been announced as of the Sun Transcript going to press). If the Vikings are successful, they will make a trek to the Boston Garden next week for the state title where they could meet Cohasset in a rematch of the memorable 1995 state championship tilt in which Winthrop edged its rival from the South Shore in triple overtime. Cohasset is playing Cathedral, which is in the same Central Catholic League as St. Mary’s.
We urge Viking fans of all ages to turn out to support our boys and girls in their quests for a state championship. High school athletics at this level not only is entertaining for adult fans, but it also creates memories for our younger children that will last a lifetime. In addition, the experience and participation in the excitement of a tournament championship game hopefully will encourage today’s youngsters to pursue athletics and to attain the same degree of success as their older counterparts are enjoying today.
