Great Job, Vikings – Winthrop High Teams, Athletes are Once again a Credit to Our Community

We wish to offer our congratulations to Winthrop High sports teams and athletes for yet another season of excellence this winter as they embark on their quests for state championships in the week ahead.

The Winthrop High boys hockey team under head coach Dale Dunbar and his staff captured another Northeastern Conference championship, the program’s second title in three years.

The Winthrop High Lady Bulldog girls’ hockey team, headed by Anthony Martucci, has won the championship of its conference and is ranked among the top teams in the state.

The WHS boys’ basketball team under long time head coach Dave Brown once again is headed to the state tourney.

And as is this is being written, the WHS girls hoop team, under first head coach Ignacio Oyola,  still has a shot at a state tourney berth depending on the outcome of their game last night with Hull.

In addition, Danika Dell’Anno of the WHS gymnastics team was chosen for the National High School Team, the first Winthrop gymnast ever selected for that honor.

The achievements of our young athletes are a tribute to the guidance of their coaches, the excellent leadership of the seniors, the dedication of all the players who worked hard to reach these goals, the support of their parents, and the efforts of the town’s youth organizations who gave our high school athletes their start.

Winthrop athletics has a tremendous tradition, and despite being the smallest school in the league, Winthrop High has fielded highly competitive teams who more often than not are title contenders and state tournament qualifiers.

It is not a coincidence that a large number of WHS athletes also are excellent students who go on to four-year colleges and universities.

The same sort of dedication to excellence on the playing field is also necessary for high achievement in the classroom.

To quote once again, as we have many times in the past, the famous words of General Douglas MacArthur when he was the Commandant at West Point, “On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days and on other fields will bear the fruits of victory.”

Winthrop’s young men and women who represent our town are a credit to our community wherever they go and serve as role models for the youngsters who a few years from now will be following in their footsteps and wearing the Viking colors.

We wish all of our athletes the best in the upcoming state tourney play. Regardless of their level of success in that endeavor, they already have proven themselves to be winners.
