Victories over Revere on Thanksgiving Day have become virtually an annual expectation for Winthrop High football fans for the past 35 years. What had been an even series since its inception in 1913 has become a lopsided rivalry, with Revere barely able to post a win every decade or so.
Winthrop’s dominance has been so complete that it is hard to imagine how seriously the late Bob Remer, who covered Winthrop High football for the Sun Transcript for 50 years, took the Revere game and how exultant he would be after a Winthrop victory.
But this year could be different, because Revere is enjoying one of its best seasons in a long time. The game figures to be a close, hard-fought affair which will come down to which team executes its game plan and commits the fewest turnovers
But win, lose, or draw, we urge Winthrop fans to observe proper decorum and sportsmanship on the sidelines. We owe it not only to the players on the field, but to the future generations of Winthrop fans and players to ensure that this rivalry remains intact. We would remind our fans that near riots canceled the rivalry twice (in the 1920s and 1940s) and jeopardized it in the 1990s, especially when the games were held in Revere.
So good luck to Coach Sean Driscoll and our players on the field and we urge all Viking fans to behave.

I would like to suggest that the writer do some research before posting. Revere is not having one of its "best" seasons. The Patriots have lost 7 straight until the victory over Winthrop. Furthermore, when was the last time there was some sort of problem at a Thanksgiving Day game? Why would you ask the people of Winthrop to behave and also state that there were issues when the game has been held in Revere. I played RHS football and have been attending the games since 1978...I can only think of a few very minor porblems - just like every other city/town. Sounds like you were trying to convince your small amount of readers to not start a riot here in Revere. If I was a Winthrop resident this article would be an insult to me. I do find it insulting to Revere residents...."especially when the games were held in Revere." I kindly ask for you to provide us with past articles that provide details of these "riot" games. Seems as if you are putting down two communities who happen to have a long football rivalry which I hope will continue for many more decades.

In 1927 there was a riot. In 1947 there was a fight and in 1997 there was the Walgreen's incident, which the Winthrop team started.
WOW three times a decade something happens, look out Winthrop fans, those Revere hooligans are on the loose again.
