Way to go, Vikings

It has been a tough year for the Winthrop High football team, but the weeks of frustration came to an end with a dramatic victory in the last seconds over Swampscott Saturday.

Sean Driscoll was right in having the Vikings play all of the schools in the Northeastern Conference Large Division, the only Small Division team do to so. This is the last year of the NEC as we know it, and Sean no doubt wanted to play schools such as Gloucester and Lynn English for the last time as league mates.

His decision has paid dividends as the Vikings showed in their thrilling win over the Big Blue. Driscoll made a gutsy decision to go for the win with a two-point conversion, and Nick McCarthy completed his last-second heroics by barreling into the end zone with the winning conversion.

Football teaches lessons about life and Sean Driscoll has taught his players two important ones: Don’t duck a challenge no matter how steep it may seem and playing for a tie isn’t going to cut it in the world. Go for the win in everything you do.

Nice going, coach Driscoll and the Winthrop Vikings.
