Winthrop has always been a strong hockey town and the latest accomplishment was a state championship by our Winthrop Youth Hockey boys at the 11-12 year-old level.
But our WYH girls hockey program is growing at a rapid rate and the teams there are also contending for state championships. Much of the credit for the success of the girls’ program has to go to WYH President James Letterie, who has made a commitment to helping the program develop girl hockey players and prepare them for the next level of play.
We would note that the Winthrop High School girls hockey team, under the direction of Coach Anthony Martucci, qualified for the State Tournament and celebrated its successful season at a banquet Friday night at the Winthrop Elks Hall.
But with more WYH girls participating, the future of WHS girls hockey is bright.
It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see Winthrop one day raising a girls state high school championship banner at Larsen Rink, right next to the one belonging to the unforgettable 1976 Division 1 state champion boys hockey team.
