That was a simple, but meaningful, ceremony at the Winthrop Senior Center Thursday morning as the Council on Aging and its Executive Director, Nancy Williams, unveiled the town’s brand new shuttle van for seniors.
Mrs. Williams thanked the town for its support and mentioned how she had filed the grant application two years ago. She received notice several months ago that the town had received the grant. She made special note of Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, who attended the ceremony, and whose efforts on Beacon Hill helped immensely with Winthrop’s application.
Speaker DeLeo is also the president of the Friends of the Council on Aging and we remember that way back when he was a Winthrop selectman, he was always one of the biggest supporters of the seniors and the programs available for them in the town.
Town Manager James McKenna and Town Council President Jeffrey Turco were also in attendance at the ceremony, recognizing that this was an important day for the senior residents of the town and for Nancy Williams and the Council on Aging.
Winthrop Parks and Recreation also will benefit from this grant. Sean Driscoll’s department will receive the used van for travel to out-of-town activities.
