Girls hockey team remains undefeated

The Winthrop Lady Bulldogs hockey team battled to a hard fought 1-1 tie with North Cape League rival Masconomet Regional last Wednesday in a contest played at Governor Dummer Academy.

Taylor Brown lit the lamp for Winthrop, assisted by McKenzie Clark and Lindsey Barker. The lone Masco goal, a power play effort, was a bit of a fluke as a Masco shot deflected off a Winthrop defender to get past Lady Bulldog goalie Katy Burt.

“It was a bit of a frustrating game for us,” said Winthrop head coach Anthony Martucci afterwards. “We outshot them 40 to 26, but we just couldn’t get the puck past their goaltender. And then their goal to tie the game came on a lucky break for them.”

The tie earned the Winthrop girls another point as they improved their record to 2-0-3 on the season to remain undefeated.

Winthrop netminder Burt was singled out by the Boston Globe as the number one player in the “Top Five of the Week” for her 40 save effort two weeks ago in a 1-1 tie with Marblehead.

“Katy’s doing an amazing job for us,”marveled Martucci of his 7th grade goalkeeper. “She gives us a great performance game in and game out.”

Martucci and his crew were set to get another crack at Masco last night (Wednesday) in a contest the outcome of which could go a long way toward determining the North Cape League champion.

The girls then will travel to Peabody tomorrow (Friday) and host Springfield Cathedral on Saturday. Face off time at Larsen is 1:30.
