He knows his stuff – Hickey urges a ‘Yes’ vote on trash collection

Readers of this week’s Sun Transcript will see a story containing the comments of Department of Public Works (DPW) Director David Hickey, who strongly urges Winthrop residents to vote “Yes” on the trash collection question on the May 19 Proposition 2 1/2 override ballot.

Hickey is speaking from knowledge and experience. As the DPW director, he oversees the town’s trash collection contract with Capitol Waste Services. Hickey argues that by voting yes on the question, the cost to individual homeowners will be much less than if they were to select an independent contractor to collect their trash each week. Hickey also noted that having multiple trash collection companies would also result in more truck traffic, with its attendant dangers and other problems for the town.

The decision is now in the hands of the voters, but we urge all residents to examine this question carefully and think before they vote.
