Terrier Pride – The BU-Winthrop connection

If you’re a college hockey fan, then you saw one of the most incredible comebacks in the sport’s history when Boston University scored two goals in the final minute to tie the game and then defeat Miami of Ohio in sudden death overtime Saturday night for the national championship.

We watched with pride as ESPN ice-level reporter Clay Mavick interviewed Winthrop’s own Boston University alumnus Michael Eruzione live on national television during the second period of the game that was played in Washington, D.C.

Eruzione had been called upon by coach Jack Parker to address the team before the game, and the 1980 Olympic hockey captain challenged the BU players to be remembered as a great team, not just a very good team.

Winthrop High graduates Dale Dunbar and Chucky Sullivan also wore the Red and White of BU hockey for coach Jack Parker. And of course, Winthrop resident Ricky DiPietro was the goaltender for BU before the New York Islanders selected him as the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft.

We congratulate the Terriers on winning the Division 1 hockey title and providing fans a thrilling championship game that was a credit to hockey and to both universities’ programs.
