Staff Report
The Winthrop Fire Department battled a three-alarm fire early Monday morning during the storm that dumped well over a foot of snow on the region.
On Monday, Jan. 26, at about 1:20 a.m., the Winthrop Fire Department was dispatched to 51 Somerset Ave. for a report of a fire.
Crews arrived to find a single-family home fully involved in fire, according to fire department officials. The home’s five occupants evacuated on their own prior to the department’s arrival. No injuries were reported.
For nearly three and a half hours, Winthrop Fire, with support from mutual aid partners, battled the fire in brutal wind and snow before eventually putting the fire out. Fire crews had to dig several fire hydrants out of the snow to be able to use them to extend hose lines.
“These were extremely challenging conditions, and I am grateful for the work of our crews and mutual aid partners in handling the incident while making sure everyone was safe and protected,” said Fire Chief Stephen Calandra. “This was our second multi-alarm fire in three days, and we are grateful to have our mutual aid help take some of the burden off of our crews, especially in windy and snowy conditions that can be harmful in prolonged exposure.”
Mutual aid was provided by Massport and the Fire Departments of Chelsea, Everett, Revere, and Boston.
