Let’s Go Winthrop – Beat Revere!!!!

When the Winthrop High football team takes to the field at Harry Della Russo Stadium at 10:00 on Thanksgiving morning to face the Revere High Patriots, coach Jon Cadigan and his Vikings will be looking for their fourth straight holiday victory over their ancient rivals.

The contest this year is guaranteed to be a hard-fought affair, with the Vikings (who qualified for the Division 6 state tournament) entering the game with a 4-6 record. Revere sports a 3-6 mark, but has won two of its last three contests, including a 21-14 victory over traditional grid powerhouse Everett.

However, as the players, coaches, and fans on both sides of the field know all too well, you can throw out the proverbial record books when Winthrop and Revere get together on Thanksgiving to renew their annual rivalry (Winthrop leads the series 60-32-3) to bring home the coveted Beachcomber Trophy. Regardless of their records, the Thanksgiving Day contest rates as a “second season” for both the Vikings and the Patriots, with a victory in front of the biggest crowd of the year alone making for a successful season.

With seasonable weather being forecast for Thursday morning, we expect that there will be a large crowd on hand. We urge both the players and the fans to exhibit good sportsmanship both on and off the field.

We wish coach Cadigan and his Vikings the best of luck.
