Letters to the Editor

Keep Winthrop Fire Improvement Going

Dear Editor,

I fully support the new consolidated fire station facility to be located at the former Middle School site, with one caveat.

There is no question that both of the existing fire stations are long overdue for replacement-it is remarkable that the Winthrop Fire Department has managed to extend their useful service life so far.

My sole concern has to do with the increased travel distance from the new station to the densely populated Point Shirley neighborhood compared to that from the old Shirley Station, which will be an additional one mile.

I strongly urge Winthrop’s elected representatives to immediately begin negotiations with the MWRA to construct a joint-use fire station on the Deer Island Sewerage facility which would cover nearby Point Shirley as well as its own treatment plant which requires outside assistance for fires and other hazardous situations.

Point Shirley continues to be constantly adversely impacted by the MWRA, including huge toxic chemical trucks which were promised to be transported by barge and also hordes of employees speeding through local streets on every shift change. Now is the time for the MWRA to rectify its broken promise to supply their facility by barge instead of huge trucks on neighborhood streets.

What was the point?

Dear Editor,

What was the purpose of your Earth Day editorial?  You ended it with the statement: “The present is bad and the future will be worse — and there is nothing we can do about it.”

Global warming is a grave problem, but your statement suggests we just give up.  There are many scientists and researchers who are working on the problem.  We can all do our part to reduce carbon emissions and encourage other people and countries to do the same.  We can hope and we can act.

Editorial writers should identify problems, but they should also point to solutions; no matter how dire the situation.
