David Green hoop tourney Dec. 27-28
The Winthrop High boys and girls basketball teams will host the fourth annual David Green Memorial Basketball Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Winthrop High gym.
The Viking boys will take on No. Reading at 2:00 and the girls will face Gloucester at 4:00 in their opening round contests on Friday afternoon. The tournament’s consolation and championship contests will be played on Saturday. Lynnfield and Stoneham are the two other teams in the girls’ division.
The tourney is named after lifelong resident and former Winthrop High star athlete David Green, who was shot in the summer of 2021 during a race-motivated hate crime in which Green, a retired State Trooper, came to the scene of the shooting from his home, which was just around the corner from where the shooter had crashed his truck. David’s heroism is credited with saving the lives of his fellow residents.
WHS boys hockey to play in holiday tourney
The Winthrop High boys hockey team once again will play in the Michael Giordano Christmas Classic hockey tournament on December 26 and 27. The Vikings will meet Lynnfield in a preliminary round contest on Thursday and then meet either Hanover
or Boston Latin at 10 a.m. in the consolation game or at noon in the championship contest on Friday.
The tournament will take place at the Murphy Rink in South Boston.
Coach Dale Dunbar’s crew is coming off a big 4-1 victory over Norwell, which is one of the perennial powers in Division 4, this past Saturday at Larsen Rink.
The triumph was Winthrop’s first win of the season after two losses and was a nice bounceback victory after the Vikings had dropped a tough 5-3 decision at Essex Tech three days previously.
In the battle with the Essex Tech Hawks last Wednesday, junior Nick Romano scored Winthrop’s first goal of the 2025 season, assisted by senior Jay Fotiades and sophomore Dom Spinale. After Essex came back to tie the game at 1-1, Viking sophomore Joe Pumphret reached the back of the Hawks’ net twice to give Winthrop a 3-1 advantage after two periods. Pumphret’s first tally came on a power play on which senior captain Phil Boncore and sophomore Paul Ferrara earned assists. Ferrara also assisted on Pumphret’s second goal, as did senior captain Mike Holgersen.
However, some costly mistakes by the Vikings in the third period allowed Essex to push across three goals to grab a 4-3 lead and an empty-netter accounted for the 5-3 finale.
WHS senior captain Mike Donahue turned in a solid effort in the net for the Vikings.
After the tournament, the Vikings will be off until January 4 when they will travel to Gloucester.
