Twilight by the Sea 2024

The Greater Boston Track Club (GBTC) Twilight by the Sea 2024 will be held on  Saturday July 13 at  Miller Field, 100 Cross St, Winthrop.

Registration is available online and closes on Thursday, July 11, at 12:00 noon. All participants (parents/guardians for those under 18) must complete the included waiver.

Entry fees are $35 for open events, $15 for the Youth 800m and Winthrop Community Mile, and free for for Winthrop residents under 18.

Day-of registration will be available for $40 for open events ($20 for the youth 800m) and must be completed before the start of the first event.

Youth ages 14 and under may enter the youth 800m. Ages 14 and over may enter the open 100m, 400m, and Mile. The minimum age is 18 for the 10,000m.

The 10,000m will serve as the USATF Open & Masters Championship with age group awards. USATF membership is required to be eligible for age group recognition.

Entry fees are non-refundable. The meet director reserves the right to cancel the event due to inclement weather.

The meet will begin at approximately 5:30 pm. A final time schedule will be emailed to all participants and posted here on Thursday after registration closes.

Parking is available on Cross St, Veterans Rd, Franklin St, Payson St, and at Winthrop Middle/High School. MBTA bus route 712/713 departs every 20-30 minutes from Orient Heights on the Blue Line.

Bathrooms are on site at the track.

This event is USATF sanctioned.

Winthrop Police Deputy Chief Stephen Rogers Honored with Role Model Award

On Thursday, June 27, 14 Winthrop youth, ages 12 to 15, participated in Basketball For Peace, a tournament sponsored by Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden and held at UMASS/BOSTON Clark Athletic Center.  Basketball for Peace was a chance to bring Boston’s young people together for a day of safe, healthy, team-oriented fun as various neighborhood teams  from around Boston, Chelsea &  Winthrop challenged each other in basketball .   It was a chance for youth, parents, and community leaders to meet prosecutors, victim advocates, community outreach staff and others in the District Attorney’s office.

 During this program, several honorees were acknowledged, including Winthrop Police Department’s newest Deputy Chief, Stephen Rogers.  Deputy Chief Rogers received “The District Attorney’s Role Model Award” is bestowed on those who not only demonstrate excellence in their chosen professions, but make selfless service to others a central tenant of their lives.   Deputy Chief Rogers is responsible for many community initiatives including the wildly successful Explorer Program, Summer Youth Police Academy, the Middle School Open Recreation program, the Stephen Acone Scholarship Fund, and leads fundraisers for Autism Awareness as well as Christmas Toy Drive and Senior Food Drives.

Suffolk Downs announces free summer activities for kids at The Track

Looking for a fun and free activity for kids this summer? For the second year in a row, The HYM Investment Group LLC (HYM), is excited to announce their partnership with Linda Sessa and Outside the Box Learning Company to deliver an exciting line-up of free family programming throughout the summer at The Track at Suffolk Downs.  Tracktivities will include days dedicated to “The Science of Bubbles”, “Slime, Wonderful Slime!”, “Messy Science” and “Creation Station”. Families are invited to the Paddock at Suffolk Downs from 9:30 am to 11:00 am every Thursday throughout July and August for hands-on science experiments, games, challenges, and more.

Over the past several years, HYM has hosted numerous community-centered events at The Track, as part of its commitment to creatively activating the site throughout the multi-phased build-out of Suffolk Downs. Since 2021, HYM has also opened The Track to the public from dawn-to-dusk daily for residents and visitors to walk, run and play. The Dog Park at Suffolk Downs, located adjacent to The Track, is also available for residents, visitors and their four-legged friends to enjoy.

“We’re excited to bring the Tracktivities back to Suffolk Downs as we continue to actively engage with the local Revere and East Boston communities,” said Thomas N. O’Brien, Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of HYM. “Welcoming families onsite is essential to actualizing our vision of creating an inviting, dynamic, and multigenerational community at Suffolk Downs.”

Each event will happen twice throughout the summer, with the first kicking off on July 11. These events are free to attend but registration is required, and can be accessed online at Eventbrite. Staffing and supplies are limited to 25 children per event. Events are appropriate for children ages 3 and up and children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the event. Events are weather dependent, and registrants will be emailed if events are canceled. The schedule is as follows:

The Science of Bubbles – July 11 and August 8

Let’s explore bubbles together! What’s the best bubble solution and how do we make it? How can we make giant bubbles? What elements are needed for the most amazing bubbles? Come explore, experiment and find out the science behind bubbles.

Slime, Wonderful Slime! – July 18 and August 15

What is ooey & gooey, easy to make, and can be any color of the rainbow? Slime, wonderful slime! Let’s use everyday household ingredients and have fun making slime.

Messy Science – July 25 and August 22

Yeast, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, baking soda, cornstarch and water, what do these have in common? They are all usually found in your home and when combined they create crazy reactions! Let’s have fun combining different combinations of ingredients while we uncover some mysteries of science.

Creation Station – August 1 and August 29

Do you love making art, building sculptures, or just seeing what you can create with a little glue, feathers, sticks, and paint? Join us for a fun morning at our Creation Station family event! We’ll provide all the materials—you just bring your imagination!

USS Constitution to go underway in honor of Independence Day

USS Constitution is scheduled to go underway from Charlestown Navy Yard, Massachusetts, on Thursday, July 4, at 10 a.m.

USS Constitution will be closed in the morning and reopen to the public for tours following the underway from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The underway will celebrate the United States’ 248th birthday and will include a 21-gun salute viewable from Fort Independence on Castle Island at approximately 11:30 a.m.

USS Constitution will fire an additional 17-gun salute as she passes the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, the former site of Edmund Hartt’s Shipyard, where USS Constitution was built and launched on Oct. 21, 1797.

USS Constitution’s cruise will be viewable from the Boston Harborwalk, Castle Island, and Charlestown Navy Yard.

USS Constitution is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for public visitation.

USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and America’s Ship of State.

She played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855.

The active-duty Sailors stationed aboard USS Constitution provide free tours and offer public visitation as they support the ship’s mission of promoting the Navy’s history and maritime heritage and raising awareness of the importance of a sustained naval presence.

USS Constitution was undefeated in 33 at sea engagements with opponents. The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the War of 1812 when British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull.
