Thrilled with the community turnout

To the Editor,

The Winthrop Public Library & Museum was thrilled with the community turnout for our special 125th Anniversary Celebration on July 27.

As with any successful event, there are many people whose efforts deserve special recognition.

Firstly, our sponsors, without whom we would not have had the resources to entertain and feed community members provided funding for the event : The Winthrop Foundation, Winthrop Charities, Bob DeLeo, a very generous anonymous donor, The Meat Market, Winthrop Marketplace, and Allison and Devin Macon, local home coffee roasters.

We were happy to enlist some other local businesses in our event details, Elite Embroidery, Print Boston, Winthrop House of Pizza, Pizza Center, Christopher’s Flowers, Balloon City and Ralph Tufo and the Squeezebox Stompers.

We were honored to be especially recognized by Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association by a commemorative plaque.

No public event is complete without press coverage to spread the word and commemorate the festivities.  We are grateful for the fine work of both Mike Cabral of WCAT TV and Maryanne Salza and the Winthrop Sun Transcript.

Many people associated with the library brought this idea of a milestone anniversary celebration to life: The staff of the library, led by Director, Greg McClay, the Winthrop Board of Library Trustees and the Friends of the Library, Winthrop by the Sea.  Enormous thanks go to my co-chairs of the event, trustee Annie Ferreira, Friends board member, Amy Carroll, and Roger Plant.  Also essential to the wonderful outcome of our planning were the efforts of Friends board members Mikayla Dalton and Linda Cargill, Head of Library Circulation Dom DeMasi and Library Assistant Tammy Cody.  And a special shoutout must be made to Winthrop High School Student, Maddy Carroll who spearheaded an effort to give a much needed, timely facelift to the Hazlett meeting room and also took wonderful pictures of some community leaders and their favorite books.

Lastly, we wish to thank the townspeople of Winthrop. Your interest and support is the reason for our continued existence.
