Council Hears Scooter Complaints

By Adam Swift

The dangers posed by motorized scooters zipping through the town came up several times during the public speaking portion of Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting.

Jack Dowd noted that when he was heading toward Revere on Tuesday, he saw an adult on a motorized scooter riding along with a young child.

“The person had a child, six or seven years old, on the front of the scooter under the handlebars,” said Dowd. “She was wearing flip flops and shorts with no elbow pads, no gloves, no helmet.”

Dowd questioned whether an adult allowing a child to ride on a motorized scooter with no protection could be classified as child endangerment.

“I hope (Police Chief Terence) Delehanty can put a stop to this type of behavior, this reckless child endangerment behavior,” said Dowd.

Council-at-Large candidate Todd Sacco said he has also observed issues with scooters in the town.

“As a candidate for councilor-at-large, I’m standing on the corner of Main and Pleasant every morning, and every morning, without fail, I see three to five scooters blowing through that red light and going toward East Boston,” said Sacco. “Someone is going to get killed. We need to stop encouraging this madness with bikes and scooters on the road.”
