Winthrop Engages Event Set for May 17

The town is hosting its Winthrop Engages event at the E.B. Newton Cultural Center on Wednesday, May 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The public is encouraged to meet participants representing town boards, committees and departments.

“The purpose of the gathering is to offer a space for interested community members to meet current board, committee, and department members and to consider volunteering to benefit the community,” said Town Council President James Letterie. “This is one way to harness the many talents of our community members. Departments could feature something special from their departments, for example, the Town Clerk’s office could offer a register to vote day.”

Anyone interested in learning more about Winthrop Engages should contact Mary Lou Osborne at the Winthrop Public Library, Letterie said.

The local Odd Fellows Lodge will be providing a homemade lunch for the families displaced from the Veterans Road fire on Saturday, May 13, according to Precinct 2 Councilor John Munson. First responders who helped battle the fire and assist the families have also been invited to take part, Munson added.

“I just want to express our empathy for the people who were displaced and for the first responders in town for being there to protect our citizens,” said Munson. “As a lodge, we are extending that invitation.”

Donations can be made to help residents affected by the Winthrop fire through the East Boston YMCA.

On Friday April 21, a fire broke out at a Winthrop apartment building that displaced over 100 individuals. The YMCA of Greater Boston is stepping forward to help collect donations on behalf of the Town of Winthrop. The Town of Winthrop will be distributing funds to all those affected.
