First Church of Winthrop Clothing Drive

First Church of Winthrop United Methodist has been collecting adult and children’s clothing and household items for families displaced during the April 21 apartment complex fire on Veterans Road.

Over a dozen volunteers from the community and Survivors by the Sea have been sorting the over 70 bags of garments, toys, diapers, bedding, and rugs.

“There has been an inpouring of donated items. It was absolutely wonderful,” said Valerie Millar, parishioner. “We’re here to help and support them.”

First Church’s long-time thrift store began as a one room space that primarily supplied women’s attire. Now, because of the community’s generosity, it has grown to providing goods for men, infants, and children. 

“We did lose a lot of things and it’s been hard. I did save my dogs,” shared Lisa Dibiasso, a case worker whose family lost their home in the fire. “We’re grateful because we have this opportunity to get clothes. At the senior center, we were given food and were able to fill out applications for housing.”
