Letters to the Editor

Thank You, Winthrop

Dear Editor,

We want to thank everyone who came out to ride, roll and play at this weekend’s fifth Annual Halloween Bike Parade and Fun Ride at Ingleside Park. Not only was it a beautiful day, it was also our biggest parade yet with over 100 kids registered! Congrats to the winners and thanks to our judges, Debbie Kneeland (FKO Afterschool), Diane Barsotti (Children’s Corner) and Marc Wallerce (Winthrop Marketplace). We know the decisions were not easy this year!

We also had a great crew riding with us around town, through the cemeteries of course, in costume for the fun ride. Thanks as always to the WPD for providing an escort to keep everyone safe.

Events like these are one of the reasons Bike Winthrop was formed five years ago- to bring our community together through the joys of biking, and to build a positive culture of biking as a fun, healthy, affordable and practical activity for both recreation and transportation- for children, the elderly and everyone in between. We hope everyone who attended was able to grab a free copy of our Winthrop Community Bike Map, with a selection of short bike rides around town that follow “low stress” streets and connect to key destinations like the library, beaches, parks and of course, ice cream. You can also find them at the library and town hall.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our partners who have supported us year after year: Winthrop Parks and Recreation, Winthrop Police Department, DJ Cuzzi, For Kids Only Afterschool, Winthrop Marketplace, Woodside Ace Hardware, Lantern Residential, the Winthrop Book Depot & Cafe and Winthrop High School volunteers.

And what a treat that this year’s free pizza was made possible by Councilor Joe Aiello, Town Manager Tony Marino, Chief Delehanty, Senator Lydia Edwards, Representative Jeff Turco, and Councilors Ruggiero, Honan, Munson, Belcher and DeMarco. Thank you all!

Events like these are truly team efforts and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of this Winthrop team. Here’s to the beginning of a safe and healthy holiday season- we hope to see you for our Holiday Lights/Winter Solstice Ride in December!

The Inflation Reduction Act… Saving Money Never Cost So Much

Dear Editor,

This is a response to Congresswoman Clark’s Op-Ed posted in the Winthrop Transcript October 20, 2022 and her faulty claim that the Inflation Reduction Act is saving seniors money. In fact, seniors cannot afford the $2.2 trillion Inflation Reduction Act package ($2,200,000,000.00!) of legislation, and seniors cannot afford Congresswomen Clark as their representative.

According to Clark, “If the Inflation Reduction Act were in law in 2020, seniors in the 5th District would have saved $7 million in reduced premiums and out of pocket costs.” Sounds great right? Wrong. This is a savings of $41 per year* per 5th District of MA Senior. Saving is good, but it is clear to everyone that this level of spending and Clark’s other policies are directly responsible for the inflation we are now suffering with. Her inflation fueled economy is costing every senior (and citizen) $296 per month. ** or $3552 per year.

At this rate of inflation the average Senior will be worth half of their current net worth in 8 years. Clark is directly responsible for making seniors less secure, because she fully supported and pushed this faulty legislation. This legislation was narrowly passed with Democrat support only. Her vote alone would have killed this reckless and costly bill.

Additionally Clark claims Medicare can now negotiate drug costs with big Pharma. Well why haven’t we been negotiating with big Pharma using Medicare’s purchasing power right along during the Clark’s tenure in Congress? Is it because Congresswoman Clark has been investing in and profiting from big Pharma as reported in a September New York Times report? The answer seems obvious.

We would like answers about the ‘leadership’ we have been getting from Clark. However, Clark has refused to speak to the public. She won’t address the cost of inflation that she has caused, the drop in the stock market value she is responsible for, the crises at the border, the raising crime, or the problems with our education systems, and on and on. Clark has refused to meet or debate in public on eight different opportunities including refusing an offer from the League of Women’s voters.

Congresswoman Clark has no solutions only faulty claims.
