Judith Merrill

Speech and Language Therapist

Judith L. (Corkhum) Merrill of Malden passed away on September 9. She was 66 years old.

Born in Boston, she was the cherished daughter of Cynthia A. (Kelsey) and James R. Corkhum of Winthrop.

Judith was employed as a speech and language therapist, working with children six months to three years old. She graduated from Worcester State College with a Bachelor’s Degree and later went on to receive her Master’s Degree from the University of Miami.

In addition to her parents, Judy is survived by her dear brothers, Jimmy Corkhum and Ken Corkhum and his wife, Meghan, both of Winthrop and Scott Corkhum and his wife, Janice of Lynnfield. She was the loving aunt of Michael, Haley and Hannah Corkhum.

A Funeral Service was held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Wednesday, September 14 at 10 a.m. followed by interment in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section). Janice Salvesen

Registered Nurse, Educator and Loving Mother and Grandmother

Janice M. (Roche) Salvesen of Winthrop, formerly of Woburn, died peacefully at her home on August 2 at the age of 93.

Born on February 27, 1929, Janice was raised in Woburn with her siblings: Virginia Slade Murphy, William H. Roche and Richard L. Roche. She graduated from St. Charles in 1946 and was President of her class.  She later graduated from Waltham Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.

On June 2,1956, Janice married Dr. Lawrence C Salvesen and moved to San Francisco for Larry’s Psychiatric residency at Presidio Army base.  They enjoyed the beautiful weather in San Francisco and took daily walks at Golden Gate Park with their two young children, Michael and Kjerstin.  After residency, they moved to Concord MA, and Bryant, Andra and Gretchen were born. 

Janice graduated from Goddard College, Vermont, in 1977, with a BA in Elementary School Teaching/ Reading Specialist.  She taught reading at The Carroll School in Lincoln and The Glover School in Marblehead.  Then, after applying for a summer tutoring job at The Massachusetts Migrant Program, she was offered the position of Health Educator.  She implemented healthcare clinics and educational programs for migrant children and their families for over twenty years.  She enjoyed traveling to various sites, learning about different cultures and languages and developing many friendships.

Janice met Mort Garchik at Goddard College and they became lifelong partners and enjoying classical concerts in NYC and hiking The National Parks as well as mountains in New England.  One of Janice’s favorite places was  Cinnamon Bay St. John USVI, where she vacationed for over 30 years with her family and friends.

Janice took great joy in her four grandchildren, Alexandra, Liam, Mikaela and Birgitta. She was a wonderful and compassionate grandmother and eagerly shared her insights and sense of adventure.

She was the proud mother of Kjerstin Salvesen, her husband, Thomas Quinn of Lincoln, Bryant Salvesen and his late wife, Adeline of Tyngsboro and the late Michael, Andra and Gretchen Salvesen; beloved grandmother of Liam Quinn, Mikaela and Birgitta Salvesen- Quinn and Alexandra Salvesen; dear sister of late Virginia Slade Murphy, Msgr. William H. Roche and Richard L. Roche and the former wife of late Lawrence C. Salvesen. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop Street, Winthrop, MA 02152, Friday, September 23 at 10 a.m. Burial is private. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 9:15 – 10 a.m. in the Church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave, Salem Ma. Arrangements are under direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, MA 01801.

Sharon McLaughlin

Retired Educator

Sharon E. McLaughlin of Winthrop passed away on September 7. She was 72 years old.

Born in Winthrop, she was the cherished daughter of the late William M. and Marjorie (Nelson) McLaughlin.

Prior to her retirement, Sharon taught Spanish at Archbishop Williams High School for 23 years and also taught at St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, Malden Catholic High School and St. John the Evangelist School in Beverly.

Sharon was the dear sister of Sheila A. Harley of Friday Harbor, WA, Rev. William H. McLaughlin of Newburyport, Capt. Kathleen McLaughlin USAF (Ret.) of San Pedro, CA, Maureen E Cook and her partner, Loren Melhart of Burien, WA, Christine M. Egan and her husband, Walter of Winthrop and the late Carol J. Koegel. She was the loving aunt of Anne E. Bjorklund, John W. Harley and his wife, Lynnette, Jean M. Harley and her husband, Greg Pentecost, Sean M. Egan and Jacob T. Egan and great aunt of Torin and Axel Bjorklund and Grant and Austin Harley; the sister-in-law of John F. Harley of Long Beach, CA, the late Maj. Stephen A. Wawak USAF (Ret.) and the late Maj. Thomas R. Koegel USAF (Ret.) and his surviving wif,e Addy Bergeron of Los Angeles, CA. Sharon is also survived by many cherished cousins, her “honorary nephew” James I. Aliberti and her dear friend,s Thomas and Vivian Reavey.

Sharon’s funeral will be from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Saturday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church-Winthrop at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Interment will follow in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section).
