Winthrop Students Start New School Year on Aug. 31.

Winthrop students will begin the new academic year on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Supt. of Schools Lisa Howard and Interim Assistant Supt. Lori Gallivan will join Winthrop High School Principal Matt Crombie, Middle School Principal Brian Curley, Cummings Elementary School Principal Andrea O’Leary, and Gorman Fort Banks Elementary School Principal Ilene Pearson and their respective staffs in welcoming back more than 2,000 students to the schools.

Town Council President James Letterie, who serves on the School Committee, wished the students well as the summer unofficially closes and the school year begins.

“I wish all the students a great school year,” said Letterie. “This is probably the first time in two-and-half school years that we’re having a normal school opening with no restrictions due to COVID. I encourage the citizens to be very cognizant of the approximately 2,000 students that will be traveling to and from school and to be extremely cautious driving on the streets.”

Letterie noted that Supt. Howard is seeking to hire additional crossing guards and interested persons may apply for the positions through the superintendent’s office.

Matt Serino returns in his role as director of athletics. The high school sports teams have begun pre-season practices.
