Scott Wiley officially took the oath of office Tuesday as the new chief of the Winthrop Fire Department.
Wiley had been serving as the interim fire chief following the retirement of Chief Paul Flanagan Sept. 30.
Town Clerk Denise Quist administered the oath to Wiley. Several members of the Winthrop Fire Department attended the ceremony.
Town Council President James Letterie congratulated the new full-time chief of the department.
“He’s been acting chief for six months, and in that short period of time, he’s really made his mark,†said Letterie. “And you could just sense, by all the firefighters that were there supporting him, that they love this guy. He treats them with respect. He treats them with dignity. And he does such a great job with the department. To have the support of your firefighters like that is commendable. We’re just happy and fortunate to have Chief Wiley leading our town’s fire department.â€
Following are new Winthrop Fire Chief Scott Wiley remarks:
“Thank you, Council President Letterie, Vice President Ruggiero, Members of the Town Council, Town Manager Marino …
Thank you to the members of the department who are here tonight …
Your presence is a sign of our mutual respect and it is greatly appreciated …
Thank you for the privilege of continuing to serve this community as Fire Chief. 8 months ago when I was sworn in as Interim Chief, I made promises to both the Firefighters as well as the residents of Winthrop that we would continuously strive to be a better department. A lot has been accomplished in 8 short months … none of which could have happened without the II buy in II of the members.
I am very optimistic about the direction this department is heading in.
We are living up to the promise of being a better department today than we were yesterday. The infusion of new members along with solid veteran leadership has created a positive environment and a palpable level of enthusiasm. In short … morale is high.
While much has been accomplished, there will always be more to do … and we promise to be prepared for whatever challenges may present themselves.
Thank you all again for this opportunity.â€
