Robert Lovering, Sr.

Law Enforcement Retiree

Richard W. Lovering, Sr., 80, of Dracut, formerly of Winthrop, passed away at the Lowell General Hospital in Lowell.

Born in East Boston, the beloved son of the late Leon and Mary Lovering, he enlisted in the US Army and after his honorable discharge he went to work for the Winthrop Police Department, the Federal Police and the Municipal Police. He was also a member of the Masons.

He was the devoted husband of Sandra (Primo) and the late Gertrude (Abbruzzese), the loving father of Diane Lovering of Chelsea, Cheryl Lovering-Manfra and  Richard W. Lovering, Jr., both of Winthrop and the late Donna McCormick and Brenda Lovering; dear brother of Danny Lovering of Lakeville, Marie Barry, Carol Kgersgard and Lorraine Lovering, all of East Boston and he is also survived by five grandchildren.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Monday, October 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday, October 19 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Services will conclude with military honors at the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Jose Lescay

Advocate for Immigrants and Horse Trainer for Suffolk Downs

Jose F. Lescay, 90, of Winthrop passed away peacefully at the Lighthouse Nursing Care Center on October 8.

Jose, known as Pepi to his friends and family, came to the US from Cuba for his work with thoroughbred horses and remained here to marry his love and start a family.

Working mostly at Suffolk Downs, he eventually had the winningest stable by percentage for a trainer. Pepi had a great deal of empathy for other immigrants who came to this

country with nothing. He always gave of himself to help them flourish and make their way to becoming US citizens.

Jose was the beloved husband of the late Lorraine (Dunshee) Lescay, son of the late Rosario Farinas Novo and Ernesto Lescay Saboya; devoted father of Rita Lescay Webb and her husband, Tim Webb of Narragansett, R.I. and George Lescay of Maine; adored grandfather of Darylle Sheehan and her husband,

Tim Allard, Robert Sheehan Jr, Rebecca Salvaggio, George Lescay, and the late Rayleen Lescay. Jose was cherished by his many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews in Cuba and Florida and is survived by his sisters: Charito, Caridad and Julia of Havana, Cuba.

Lucy Alabiso

A Positive and Deeply Caring Woman

Lucy (Chiochetti) Alabiso, 91, of Winthrop passed away on October 6.

The devoted wife of the late Peter Alabiso, she was the loving mother of Peter Alabiso and his wife, Charlene of Methuen, Jean (Alabiso) Cappo and her husband, Mark of Savannah, GA and Michael Alabiso and his wife, Rachel of Winthrop; beloved grandmother to Steve Alabiso (and his wife, Jamie), Kayla Bemis (and her husband, Matthew), Jonny Cappo and Michael Alabiso; sister of the late Vincent Chiochetti and his late wife, Jean of Mantua, OH. Lucy also leaves behind a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Those who knew Lucy knew her to be a positive and deeply caring woman. Her devotion to her family and friends was noted by many and her home was always the hub of joyful gatherings not only on the holidays but all throughout the year.

The funeral was conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Tuesday, October 12 followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Rev. Peter Graziano celebrated the mass and offered prayers at the interment in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Luigi Guarino

Of Winthrop

Luigi Guarino of Winthrop passed away on October 7 at the age of 83.
The beloved husband of the late Maria (Memmolo), he was the devoted father of Biagio Guarino and Gerardo Guarino, dear brother of Assunta, Armando, Maria, Orlando and Antonio Guarino and the late Mario Guarino and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor Luigi’s life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home today, Thursday, October 14 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. before leaving in funeral procession to St. John’s the Evangelist Church Winthrop St., Winthrop for a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in celebration of Luigi’s life. Services will conclude with Luigi being entombed with his beloved wife, Maria at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Norma Penney

Retired Teacher

Norma D. Penney of Revere, formerly of Winthrop, passed away on January 17, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 81 years old.

Born in Melrose, she was the beloved daughter of the late Fred and Constance (Healy) Penney, the

dear sister of the late Eugene C. Penney and the loving aunt of Mary K. Haque of Middletown, CT and Brendan Penney of Hamden, CT.

A graduate of Winthrop High School, Class of 1957, she graduated from Colby Junior College in 1959 and from Lesley College in 1961.

Norma was an elementary school teacher in the Woburn Public Schools, in Woodbridge,

England and in the Everett Public Schools. She was a longtime member of the Delta Psi Omega, a national dramatic sorority.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service to be held in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, today, Thursday, October 14 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Walter
