Letter to the Editor

On the Removal of Trees

Dear Editor:

The Winthrop Tree Committee wishes to clarify protocol for disputing the cutting down of public shade trees. Our Massachusetts state law states the following:

https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter87/Section4

Section 4. Tree wardens shall not cut down or remove or grant a permit for the cutting down or removal of a public shade tree if, at or before a public hearing […], objection in writing is made by one or more persons, unless such cutting or removal or permit to cut or remove is approved by the selectmen or by the mayor.

Accordingly, when a written objection is received by the Tree Committee, the Tree Committee will forward the letter of objection to the Town Council and request from the Council a decision regarding the objection.

Please join the committee in thanking Aaron Armitstead, who has recently resigned as Tree Warden, for his thoughtful time and consideration regarding the preservation and growth of Winthrop’s canopy. We are grateful for all his efforts.

Respectfully,

Sue Wolverton
