Winthrop Honors Police, First Responders, 9/11 Victims

The Winthrop Republican Town Committee sponsored a rally on September 11, to honor the Police, Fire Personnel, first responders and the memory of 9/11 victims. The event was held at the Belle Isle Bridge, and was part of a state wide effort by the GOP coined, “MA Backs the Blue.” 

Deacon Jim Leo from St. John the Evangelist Church began the event at 8:30 a.m. with a blessing of the event and a prayer for the almost 3000 victims of September 11, 2001. Next the large crowd was reminded of the significance of the event, the day, and the unselfish contribution provided by Police and first responders. At 8:46am the crowd observed a moment of silence signifying the first plane to hit Tower one in New York City. Following this Winthrop residents Paul Caruccio and Paul Reardon provided a reading of every one of the 206 Massachusetts innocent victims of the atrocious attack. This included memorializing the loss tragic of Winthrop’s own Kathleen Anne Nicosia. 

Throughout the rally attendees held signs supporting the police and confirmed the important contribution police and first responders make to our town and country. Additionally, there were moments of silence observed at 9:02 a.m. signifying the Tower two hit, 9:37.a.m. signifying the hit on the Pentagon and 10:02 a.m. signifying the crash of the fourth jet into the fields. 

Republican Committee Chairman Paul Caruccio stated, “It was a moving event, and it was fitting that we held the rally on the Belle Isle Bridge with airline jets roaring overhead. After all Boston is where the jets originated that hit the Towers. I was elated to have so many support this event including the large group of local veterans holding American Flags. The flashing blue strobe lights offered by a local police cruiser provided a sense of security for all in attendance. The day was a huge success.”
