U.S. Sen. Ed Markey Carries Winthrop on His Way to Democratic Nomination

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey was a big winner in Winthrop and statewide, defeating Congressman Joe Kennedy III to capture the Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s Primary and earn the right to advance to the General Election on November 3.

Markey received 2,286 votes in Winthrop while Kennedy received 1,571 votes, mirroring the impressive margin of victory that the incumbent Senator enjoyed statewide.

Markey had the key support of Mass. Speaker Robert A. DeLeo in the Democratic Primary. DeLeo has worked in a productive partnership with Markey during the Malden legislator’s stellar career as a Congressman representing Winthrop in the district and as a U.S. Senator representing Massachusetts. Precinct 6 Councillor Stephen Ruggiero and other prominent residents also supported Markey in his campaign for re-election.

Winthrop for Markey Campaign Organzer Alicia DelVento, who presided over a well-attended Aug. 22 rally for Markey on the Town Hall Lawn, said she was thrilled to see Winthrop voters turn out in great numbers to support Sen. Markey.

“Last night’s results from across the Commonwealth confirm what we in Winthrop have known since Day 1: Now more than ever, we need a Senator that fights for the issues that matter most, and I am thrilled to see that the citizens of the Commonwealth agree with me that Ed Markey continues to be the right person for the job,” said DelVento, who is a State Democratic Committeewoman.

Valentino “Tino” Capobianco, a member of the Winthrop School Committee and the State Democratic Committee, supported Kennedy in the Democratic Primary. “We believed in our campaign and it just didn’t go our way,” said Capobianco. But I have nothing but respect and congratulations for Ed Markey and his team and I’m just thankful the voters had a choice this election.”

Markey will face off in November against Kevin O’Connor, who won the U.S. Senate Republican Primary in Massachusetts.

Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Sen. Joe Boncore were unopposed in Tuesday’s election. The two incumbents received overwhelming support from Winthrop residents at the polls.
