Mark DeGregorio Joins WLL in Re-Launching Senior League

After a 15-year hiatus, the Winthrop Senior Baseball League will return this spring.

Mark DeGregorio, who grew up in Winthrop and played college baseball at Merrimack, is bringing back the league for baseball players in the 13-16 age category. The organization will be under the umbrella of the Winthrop Little League.

DeGregorio, 37, whose official title is league commissioner, said the league will be using the WHS baseball field and Ingleside Park for its games.

“The season is set to start in late May,” said DeGregorio. “It will run for approximately eight weeks followed by playoffs.”

DeGregorio, whose father is Winthrop Hall of Fame inductee and UMaine football alumnus Mark DeGegrorio, expects that there will be at least four teams playing a 15-game schedule. Coaches of the teams are ready to begin in their volunteer leadership positions.

“We’re really excited to get the league up and running again because Winthrop hasn’t had anything for this age group for a long time,” said DeGregorio, who coached the Winthrop JV baseball team last year. “We’ve lost people to lacrosse because of the fact there hadn’t been a baseball league for a long time.”

 DeGregorio said he is working closely with Winthrop Parks and Recreation Director Sean Driscoll is securing the fields for practices and games. The new league will also be holding instructional clinics for prospective players leading in to the 2020 season.
