Winter sports season swings into high gear

The 2020 winter sports season is set to kick into high gear this week for Winthrop High athletic teams.

The Viking boys hockey team will host non-league opponent Dedham this evening (Thursday) at Larsen Arena. The first face-off of the 2020 campaign for coach Dale Dunbar and his crew is set for 6 p.m. 

The Vikings have a busy opening week. After tonight’s contest they will trek to Endicott College on Saturday to take on Northeastern Conference North Division rival Beverly and then will travel to Connery Rink in Lynn next Wednesday to face NEC South foe Lynn.   

The WHS girls basketball squad, under the direction of new coach Joe Lowe, also will be in action this evening (Thursday) when the Lady Vikings entertain non-league opponent Charlestown. The opening tip is set for 6 p.m.at the WHS gym.

Lowe and his squad will play at Lynn Classical on Tuesday and at Danvers next Thursday.

The WHS boys basketball team, under the direction of coach Dave Sacco, will open its 2020 season tomorrow (Friday) when the Vikings host non-league rival Malden Catholic at 7 p.m. at the WHS gym. They will entertain Lynn Classical on Tuesday and Danvers next Thursday.

The WHS girls hockey team will host Beverly in their season-opener this Saturday at Larsen Rink at 1:30 p.m.. Veteran coach Anthony Martucci’s squad then will entertain Medford at Larsen next Wednesday at 6:10 p.m.

Three Vikings named to NEC all-star team

Three members of the Winthrop High football team were named to the Northeastern Conference South Division all-star team last week. They are: Bobby Hubert, who rushed for 1069 yards on 200 carries and scored 12 touchdowns, while also passing for two touchdowns; Tyler Rockefeller, who ran for 287 yards on 44 attempts, scoring five touchdowns and who grabbed six passes for 127 yards; and Bryan Conceicao, who was the top Viking defender this season and who also ran for 189 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 135 yards and a TD. In addition, Matt Hurley received Honorable Mention status.
